Don was a good friend, who I have known for over 70 years, as he lived opposite me in Tinto Road, Canning Town, East London.
As Don was a working musician, most weeknights were spent playing in clubs in London, but Sunday was his evening off, so we would often head up to the West End to enjoy some live music together.
In 1952 Don and I embarked on a "road trip", travelling to the Costa Brava in Northern Spain in Don's DKW car. In those days, there were no motorways, so it took us 3 days to drive down to Spain, passing through tiny French villages on the way. On one occasion in a bar in a remote Spanish village, Don was handed a guitar and asked to play a tune. The locals were clearly not expecting to hear such talent as Don launched into his repertoire! Don was always good company and entertained me with many amusing stories of his RAF days during our travels.
My wife, Betty and I kept in touch with Don and June over the years and would enjoy meeting for lunch.
I will remember Don for his sharp wit and sense of humour - he will be sadly missed.
